Most Anticipated Films of 2013: January – March

0

With the start of the new year it is the start of the new movie season. While many movies in the first quarter of the year tend to be lackluster or just down right terrible, this year has one of the most thorough and sure to be entertaining line ups in recent years.
Here is the rundown of my most anticipated films of January – March.

Gangster Squad – January 11th
Layout 1

Kicking off the new year with a bang comes Gangster Squad, the story of cops and criminals in 1949 L.A. Even though the film has gotten mixed reviews I still think it looks like a great piece of “pulp” cinema. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and including a great cast such as Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Sean Penn. It is sure to be a fun popcorn flick.

The Last Stand – January 18th

The Last Stand Poster

Even though Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a few minor cameo’s during his time as “The Governator”, The Last Stand is Arnold’s true big screen returning. Schwarzenegger plays a run down old sheriff in a small border town. When a drug lord escapes an FBI Prison transfer and guns for the Mexican border. Arnold and his rag tag team of deputies including Johnny Knoxville and Luis Guzman are the only thing standing between drug lord and his escape. I love the throwback feel of the film and the R rating makes me believe that it will be better and not have to hold back on its violence or dialogue. Also it is directed by the constantly great Kim Ji – Woon (The Good, The Bad and The Weird, I Saw The Devil) and that is another great sign.

Movie 43 – January 25th

Movie 43 Poster

There is no movie that baffles me more than Movie 43, crude, vulgar, obscene, sexy, all great words to describe the ridiculous red band trailer. To be honest I have no idea what the story of this movie actually is, but when your cast includes actors such as Hugh Jackman, Emma Stone, Kristen Bell, Naomi Watts, Halle Berry, Kate Winslet, Richard Gere and about 20 other well known stars, there is obviously something drawing them to this film and I want to know what it is. The movie has sat on the shelf for several years and has about 10 directors.
I intend to write a more detailed piece about my thoughts on this movie, so check back soon!

Parker – January 25th

Parker Poster

Jason Statham has become synonymous with action films, for better and worse. I personally find him to be a talented actor who just gets type cast a lot. This is not a bad thing however because every time I see Statham pop up in a trailer I always know the movie is going to be entertaining. While some of his movies are better (The Bank Job, Crank), even his weakest efforts are usually entertaining at the very least. Statham plays Parker, a modern day Robin Hood of sorts, who steals but does not believe in violence. However when his crew betrays him and leaves him for dead he seeks out revenge. While the plot may end up being very generic, I believe this movie will be pretty damn entertaining. Plus you got Jennifer Lopez co starring and she’s never a bad person to have on screen.

Bullet to the Head – February 1st

Bullet to the Head Poster

The first of several Sly films to be released this year is Bullet to the Head. With his recent success of Expendables, Rambo and even the new Rocky movie, it is nice to see him returning to the starring seat. While I admit I am finding him to be a much better director than actor these days, it will be fun seeing Stalone return to the genre that made him famous. The movie teams Stallone, who plays an assassin, that partners with a detective played by Sung Kang (Ninja Assassin). There isn’t a lot of other information of the on the story, but the trailer looks pretty sweet.

The Sorcerer and the White Snake – VOD Now, Limited Theatrical release February 8th

The Socrerer and the White Snake

Jet Li is probably my favorite martial arts star around these days, not only is he a total badass when it comes to martial arts, he is also a very talented actor with a wide range of roles. This film looks like nothing he has done before in terms of its shear ambition. While I admit some parts of the trailer look a bit kiddish or cheesy, as a whole the movie looks very interesting and beautifully made. Not to mention when Jet Li is an any type of action role there is going to be some ass kicking. A Good Day to Die Hard – February 14

die-hard-5-poster

Good old Bruce Willis is back as cop John McClane in the firth installment of the popular Die Hard series. I am a major fan of the original trilogy, and was excited and then in turn disappointed by Live Free or Die Hard. The movie wasn’t terrible but it also wasn’t the balls to the wall excitement that the originals are so known for. I am hoping that with A Good Day to Die Hard fueled by the recent 80’s/90’s style action movie resurrection going on I think this entry has great potential. Dark Skies – February 22nd

Dark Skies Poster

The first quarter is seemingly stocked with great action movie choices. Sadly the same cannot be said for horror movies, of the first quarter offerings only 3 caught my attention and only one made this list. Dark Skies is an alien film about a family that begins experiencing strange phenomena. While I admit this movie could go south very easily, being the horror fan that I am I can’t help but be intrigued by Dark Skies concept. I haven’t seen a good alien horror flick in quite some time. Also the fact that it didn’t try and be in 3-D or Found Footage gives me a bit more hope.

Snitch – February 22nd

Opening alongside Dark Skies is the new Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson film, Snitch. The action drama stars Johnson as the father of a wrongfully arrested boy. When the US Attorney wants the boy to set someone up, his father volunteers. From here Johnson goes into the dangerous life of an informant into a dangerous drug cartel. There something about The Rock I just like, he has quite an interesting career and body of work, some better like The Rundown or Fast Five, other were big misfires, like Tooth Fairy. Over the last several years he has been in quite a lot of movies and has about 4 other films coming out this year. This movie is going to either be very good or very bad. Here’s hoping its a good one!

Dead Man Down – March 8th

Dead Man Down Poster

Of all the movies on this list I think Dead Man Down is the one I am looking forward to the most. It stars Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace and is directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – 2009). Colin Farrell starred in one of my favorite movies this year (Seven Psychopaths) and have been a fan of quite a bit of his other films. Noomi Rapace, Terrence Howard and Dominic Cooper are all part of the supporting cast. It is a tough movie to describe and I do not think I can do the plot justice, so instead I recommend people watch the trailer.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone – March 15th

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Poster

If there is one movie on the list that has the potential to be a monumental failure it is The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. That being said with a cast that includes Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi and Jim Carrey in major roles, not to mention Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini and the sexy Olvia Wilde in the supporting cast and you have the ensemble of a winner. The story involves Carell and Buscemi as a team of stage magicians who are not all that great at what they do. This is counterbalance by the chris angel like magician played by the hilarious Jim Carrey. It has been some time since he has been a truly worthwhile film and this one looks like it could be a Incredible!

Trance – March TBA

The last film on my list and perhaps the most strange and interesting is Trance. To be quite honest I don’t know a good way to summarize the plot in a coherent way. What excites me however is the talent involved in the film. James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class) is set for the starring role, alongside Vincent Cassel (Mesrine, A Dangerous Method) and the always stunning Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Clerks 2). This cast is great and to top it off they are being directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later) who is one of my favorite directors alive right now. The film is also carrying an R rating which to me is normally a good sign.
